Checking your tread depth is an important part of your regular car care routine for a number of reasons because it ensures that your vehicle is both safe and legal on the roads.
In order for a tyre to be road legal it must conform to the following:
- 1.6 millimetres or more tread remaining
- Across central 3/4 of the tyre’s tread
- Around the whole circumference of the tyre
Most tyre manufacturers now add wear bars to a tyre in order to provide a quick visual indication as to whether or not a tyre is legal. These small raised bars can be seen in the tread lanes, and once level with the tread the tyre needs to be changed.
For a further quick visual check insert a 20 pence coin into each lane of tread in several places around the tyre. If you are able to see the raised edge of the coin above the tread then your tyres require immediate attention.
It is recommended that your tyres are changed at 3 millimetres as having a tread depth lower than this begins to affect braking distance and also grip. In wet in wintry conditions having an adequate level of tread helps to keep you and your family safe on the roads.

Combined Tyres & Autocare also rotate your tyres to ensure that those in the best condition are placed at the rear of your vehicle where the most grip is required.
